On my PC it's completely broken with Thunderbird 68.4.2. My calendar list is gone. Entries are still there but without any color and the UI is not responding.
On my Laptop it works though. Same version, same set of calendars (some Google calendars, some CalDav).
Edit:
It's really strange. Just updated to 68.5.0. Directly after restarting Thunderbird to install the update, Lightning worked again perfectly. After a second restart, I have the same issues as before.
To create your own collections, you must have a Mozilla Add-ons account.
