Google Calendar (bidirectional) working really well with CalDAV
---------------------------------------------------------------

If you are still using Google Provider 0.9 to access your Google Calendar you should be having A LOT of problems right now.

I would recommend to switch to CalDAV following this google instructions
http://support.google.com/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=99358

Thunderbird -> File -> New -> Calendar -> On the Network -> CalDAV (Paste link here)

Your CalDAV link for a particular calendar should be something like this:
https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/ (HERE PASTE YOUR GOOGLE CALENDAR ID) /events
Google Calendar ID could be found below on any individual Calendar Settings options.
Remember to replace the "@" for a "%40" without quotes when you paste the ID.

Eg. it would look like this
https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/fhoasdasdasdasqnefhm330t2c%40group.calendar.google.com/events

Thunderbird will request
username: Google calendar email
password: Password of this email

CalDAV also syncs my colored categories :)

Read the known issues for Mac and some mobile devices:

Hope this could help someone :)

Provider has been working flawlessly for me over the last year. Besides the obvious lack of development happening...it wasn't buggy. After I updated Thunderbird, and also Lightning yesterday, I started getting a few glitches. I have about 15 different calendars linked into Thunderbird...and I noticed a few events had switched calendars and added random alarms. No big deal...switched them back. Then it happened more, and more, and more. It got to the point where I have now lost 1,000's of important business events which just vanished. It took extremely private events, and moved them into public calendars with which I share access with 100's of people, and added alarms to them. I started getting phone calls from people saying my private doctor's appointments just made a notification on their phone with all my info.

I finally had to remove Provider, as it was still happening every time I opened Thunderbird to get to my email...and didn't even open Lightning.

I'm now looking at years worth of meticulously organized events either missing or with lost data, and in public forums.

So just be VERY CAREFUL with this program. If it ever goes wrong for you too...you will have all your private stuff sent out to EVERYONE!

This is a great add-on but without the gtask sync it is crippled. I have been following this add-on for about a year and there is no progress. I would appreciate if Philipp can give us a date. Gtask sync is somewhat curial for me to keep using thunderbird in the near future. I do not think I am alone in this expectation. I wish google chrome had an integrated email/calendar/task suit....

It works! And in Ubuntu, you can see events in the Unity calendar indicator .

I tried searching through bugzilla, but that is a horrible mess. This needs google task syncing ASAP.

Re Suggestion by Carlos below.
dl Business Calendar Free from the Android Market. This will enable you to sync your Google calendars to your smart phone. Then with 'Provider for GC' you can add appointments and reminders on your phone which will appear on your Lightning calendar and visa versa. With this android app I can also push a calendar to my wife's phone (from Google) so she can see what my work schedule is doing.
Provider for Google Cal is a fantastic add-on. I'm just a little peeved its not available for TB 5.0 +

I really didn't appreciate how much difference this makes until I tried to set up Lightning on SeaMonkey to access Google Calendar and had to use CALDAV. Hoping that it might one day be compatible with SeaMonkey please!

I am using this only for a few days, but I think that is very useful.
I have 2 sugestions :
1 - Is possible to have a syncr with a Smartphone or blackberry , with Gmail ???
2 - Is possible to have an option to send a mail O sms with the alarm of the event ? (like Calendar in Google accounts)

Thanks

Hi,
When i try to delete an occurence on events which repeat weekly then the agenda becomes READ_ONLY and I cannot synchronize the google agenda.
I delete the specific occurence via the webbrowser in the google calendar. Then i try to synchronize the agenda in thunderbird but it does not work. The occurence still remain in lightning.
I seems that lightning does not actualize its cache ???

best regards

I have used this add-on for months and was very happy with it. Suddenly it stopped working and when I checked my add-ons, Thunderbird was saying 7.0.1. was not compatible with the add-on. While googling for a solution I found we can add a Google calendar to Thunderbird as a CalDAV (File>New>Calendar, On the network, ...). I tried and it works in both directions just fine.
I am using 7.0.1 on Ubuntu 11.10

I love this add on and have used it for a couple of years. It is invaluable. I noticed that a few people have noted a problem I just had, not being able to add/modify an entry nor respond to alerts. Somehow, my calendar was locked and changed to read only. Once I unchecked read only, everything worked just fine. I hope this helps some people. Thank you for a wonderful add on.
