This add-on used to be very nice and useful, however it stopped working recently (now with Thunderbird 17.0 on Linux Ubuntu 12.10 64bits). Now whatever SMTP you choose it will always send emails with the default server for the account.

I used this nice addon in the past, but it does not work anymore with TB7.

Great extension, thank you. I wish there was some visual clue for which SMTP server is the current default. I.e. which server will be used if just click the Send button. Something like a checkbox next to the server name in the button drop down menu.

Since I am using a portable thunderbird, I use this add on every day to choose my SMTP server.

I have been using SmtpSwitch (v 0.2) for quite a while, and it has worked well. But when I upgraded to v 1.0, the extension stopped working -- the dropdown menu disappeared, so no server options were available.
I have now gone back to SmtpSwitch v 0.2, which is working properly.
FYI, I'm using Thunderbird 2.0.0.23; and all accounts are set to use the default SMTP server.

To all looking for this functionality but compatible with multiple identities, please have a look at SendVia:

Choose your SMTP server or create a new one and use it for the current message.
SendVia aims at remaining simple. I've been happily using it for months without any problem. I use several identities, and I'm constantly moving with my Linux laptop).

Although the extension did not work at first, it appeared to be a configuration related problem. In the account settings, you can select which SMTP server must be used for the specified account. If this entry is not set to "Use Default Server", the extension will not have any effect.
A small request: is it possible to provide an option to set whether the default SMTP server should be changed or whether the message should just be send for this time by an alternative SMTP server.

I'm giving this more than one star because it has potential.
Nevertheless, I'm afraid I have to reiterate what previous commenters have said: it appears in the UI but doesn't appear to actually use the selected SMTP server.
I'm using Thunderbird/2.0.0.19 (20081209) without any other add-ons installed.
Additional functionality that would be nice: selecting a default SMTP server based upon WAN IP, or making it switch to another if the first fails.
Double-six: I'm very interested to see your improved code -- and contribute to improving it further.

I need this improved extension, usually SMTP servers are different for different accounts, but sometimes one server fails, and I need to switch to another temporally.

Hi all,
I extended the code of this extension to make it usable even with distinct SMTP servers associated to different accounts / identities.
But smtpswitch comes with no licence. How can I publish my code? Does anyone know how to contact the author?

Please read all of the reviews as there are many good tips. I would like to add my tip.
In order for the Sens Button Drop Down box to have a viewable text choice; You must make sure that the description is completed for the various SMTP servers. The Description must be filled in by ............ Goto then then then each SMTP to have a name in the text line.
- This is a Fantastic Add On and I thank the author for solving my and several of my friends dilemnas when running our laptops to several sites.

Thanks to Alex Dean for the tip about setting all accounts to use the 'default server' - once I'd done that, this plug-in worked fine. And it's so nice having it integrated into the UI without adding a huge new shouty button.

Contrary to what some commentators might think, and especially hanzolo, this extension works perfectly (except perhaps the bug reported by alex dean but I never faced it). It shows itself in the UI, but unlike too many extensions, it doesn't show a big new button, but rather integrates very elegantly with the existing Send Message Now button by adding a small drop-down arrow on it, allowing to choose the SMTP in just one more clic. No options needed, it just works out-of-the-box!
I really appreciate not needing to first click on a separate button to choose the SMTP. If you want a big button in your UI, see the "SmtpSelect" extension.

I didn't have the repeatedly reported problem with this extention not affecting the smtp server selection. The problem is more like: the extention does not appear to do anything at all, not even show itself in the UI.
Some hints on how to use this thing would have been a great idea.

If it doesn't appear to be working, and sending always uses the same SMTP server regardless of which you select or which you set as Default, I can help. It's a thunderbird configuration issue that I think maybe should be reported as a bug. I've used Thunderbird for at least 4 years, and honest to God it was only today I finally figured out what was going on. Any time I entered multiple SMTP servers, no matter which one was 'Default', my 'Send' always used the one I had first entered. The only way I could use a different server was to delete the previous one. Dumb, dumb, dumb...
OK, excuse the rant. Here's what I (and it seems some other who have reviewed this plugin) have been missing... there are 2 places in the Account Settings which are relevant.
1. The 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' pane in 'Account Settings'. This is the obvious one. You can enter multiple servers, and set one as 'Default'. But normally, no matter what you do, 'Send' won't respect your choice. Arrgh.
2. In 'Account Settings', the main pane of each account has it's own 'Outgoing Server (SMTP)' drop-down box. By default, this is set to a specific server, and that's the one which will be used when you send mail from this account. 'Send' won't respect the 'Default' setting unless you select 'Use Default Server' from this select-box.
SmtpSwitch appears unable to override this behavior. If a mail account has a specific outgoing server selected, then that server will be used regardless of what you pick via SmtpSwitch. If you edit your mail account to 'Use Default Server', then SmtpSwitch works exactly as described.
I don't understand this behavior at all. I guess if you always want mail from 1 account to use the same SMTP server, it's the correct way to do things. But for me, I don't base my choice of SMTP server on 'which account I'm sending from'. I base it on 'where am I at the time'. At home, I use the SMTP server provided by my ISP, since it's the fastest. But they only allow me to connect when I'm on their network, so when I'm travelling with my laptop, I use a 3rd-party SMTP server. I always use the same outgoing server for all of my mail accounts, so the way TBird is set up to ignore my 'Default' selection, and the way it doesn't allow SmtpSwitch to function as desired, is really confusing and annoying. I hope this helps anyone who's had a similar issue.

I had a problem with my school\'s isp and my home isp. At school my smtp was different from my home smtp, which made me have to change my default between the two if I wanted to send mail. But now I can just choose which one to send from. I\'m not sure if the other two comments were using it this way, or if they were just trying to change from which email to send from(which is something thunderbird already does anyways)

What a wasted install! This thing doesn't work. It just always uses the default smtp server. Too bad the author was so lame as to not even provide a way to contact him about it.
