Very handy, thank you.
Should you plan a next version, I see two directions, provided this does not restrict the performances of Thunderbird : display the note as a tooltip from the icon in the list ; propose to attach a note to a part of a mail (imagine you received a list of ads, you could want to remember which ones you answered to).

What a great addon!!!!. In very little time since I discovered it, it became an indispensable tool. A must have. (as a minor detail consider changing the show/hide/add not icon in the headers of the message pane... it looks as made in the early 80')

Seems like great idea. However, the plugin do not have support for other than English language - it is OK to write a note but it affects encoding of email itself.

Secondly, the plugin makes my Thunderbird very slow - after removing, everything was OK again.

Good idea but needs some more work.

I can't imagine not using the conversations preview, so discovering in this plugins support forum that the maintainer has said [conversations] "changes the Thunderbird too much" and essentially writes it off as a possibility leaves me pretty disappointed, it could have been a nice utility. Instead, uninstalled because it's essentially unusable.

-- EDIT --
Thanks for your response alehro, I've posted on your forum with my reasoning. For others, he's correct that due to Conversations not being standard, it isn't really his fault that they're incompatible. That said, he's willing to listen, so for others like me who believe both are productivity tools and would marry very well, please leave him support for the effort on his forum!

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.4.0.8).

Here is what Conversations' developers write about that:
"Extension XXX does not work with Thunderbird Conversations.
As conversations is replacing the message reader, extensions that interact with the message reader won't work with Conversations. The good news is, I've taken this case into account and other addons can write "plugins" to interact with conversations if it's installed. I blogged about it. Please send an email to your favorite addon author, and point them to this blog post. Some cool addon authors have written plugins for Conversations: Lightning and Enigmail are compatible with Conversations!"
So, do you want me to write an add-on for Conversations? Please explain your position on the aforementioned forum. (Unfortunately if you simply modify your message here I won't receive notification)

I have always wanted this function, simple add short (or long) note to any email. I have a lot of emails with same sender and subject (actual content is in attachment), it's really hard to find certain message because search can't go into attacments. This is almost perfect but is there a way to show notes as one column in message list? I mean note itself not just icon.
Does the search dig into these notes, if not could that be done?

at first I was mad and thought the plugin sucked, I found a bug though, and am working around it lol... to redo this bug, cntl+f9 to make a note, and type short word "ha" new line "ha" new line "ha" you'll notice a lag, the windows 7's application tab appears to close and reopen. I thought this bug was making this note program unusable, to use the plugin, you have to manually make the text box larger than 3 lines, else it'll keep repeating the lag for each letter you type.
Great plugin, but please adjust the plugin to recognize large text boxes

Thank you for reporting. I'm working on it. You may subscribe to discussion here: http://mnpforum.alehro00.com/slow-editing-tp4638986.html
Also I would like to know why you were mad at first. Is it because of the lag or is there something else which may cause new users to dislike it?
Please post any follow ups on the forum. If you will just edit the review I won't receive notification.

I love this addon and can't imagine being without it anymore. However I have a suggestion concerning the graphics for the notes: Could you get rid of that ugly gray background that's behind the various Ns? Making it transparent makes that column so much neater looking. And also just eliminate the - graphic that fills the space for every email if there's no note. Only seeing the N when there is a note makes it easier to sort through to find the notes, and just gets rid of unnecessary clutter. I actually edit those files each time there's an upgrade with those fixes. It gives it a much nicer look.

Thanks for the review. I'm going to release a new version with nice icons in a couple of weeks. Also there will be automatic tagging of messages with notes, so it will be much easier to find them.

Great addon. I use Thunderbird Conversations addon, so is it possible to make it compatible with it ?

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.3.0.4).

I'm sorry but it is impossible. The amount of work to make them compatible is comparable to the amount of work to merge these addons into one single addon. Here is more detailed explanation: http://mnpforum.alehro00.com/Message-Notes-Plus-for-Thunderbird-1-2-2-9-td4337293.html

It quickly became a natural and must-have add on for me. I use TB at home and Outlook at work - Outlook seems crippled without this functionality.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.3.0.4).

You may try to google 'outlook notes for email'. It gives at least 3 solutions about notes for Outlook .

Just now added Message Notes Plus to my Thunderbird, and got exactly what I needed, without any trouble. Many Thanks!

I've tried all of the message note extensions and this one I found to be the most useful to have a persistent note attached to a specific email.

However, there are a couple of improvements that would make this even better:

1) Create a toolbar button that one clicks to add a note to an email. Right now a user has to right-click somewhere on the body of an email to open up the context menu in order to add a note. A tool bar button would greatly improve accessibility and ease of use.

2) Provide an option to add a color background to the note message box -- something other than white so the note stands out more below to the email. I used Dom Inspector to find the code and Stylish to apply my changes to color the box yellow, like a post-it note. I also changed the text to bold, as it was more readable on a yellow background.

Other than those two issues (one of which I was able to resolve on my own) this is a great add-on. Thanks so much.

UPDATE: Ok, I see the button now. My button doesn't look at all like yours, which is why I overlooked it.

My button is just a tiny gray smudge with no wording (it's so small that it has no identifiable shape or form -- it literally looks like a smudge or spot.) I didn't realize that it was a button at all.

Perhaps it is the Nuvola theme I am using that is causing the problem; I'll see what I can do to fix that because, quite frankly, all the icons on my message bar are terrible and entirely too small.

Anyhoo, my gray smudge of a Note button works, so all is well. No more of having to add a note via the context menu. FIVE stars now!! Thanks.

UPDATE2: I didn't have the option "Icons and Text" selected for that toolbar. Now, I see the wording.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.2.2.9).

1) The button is already there. You can see it on the extension's screenshot. Let me know please if you found it or not.

Very Nice. Does just what I need it to do. I do note that the Notes column does not show an icon when I add a note to the message. Is there an area where I need to pick an icon? Using TB 10.0.2

(Update--Narrowed it down to the icon not showing in the column when the view is "Unified" in View-->Folders--> and you are in the unified inbox)

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.2.2.9).

UPDATE:
Fixed in version 1.4.0.5

Thank you for your investigation. But I think it's minor bug. It will be fixed after majors.

it is similar to XNote++ add on (<a class="linkification-ext" href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/xnotepp/" title="Linkification: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/xnotepp/">https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/xnotepp/</a>) but with search capabilities.

Vantage point: Search among notes

Minor problems: Bad icon in message toolbar (TB 3.1)

Suggestions for further improvement
1. keyboard Shortcut (and button in message toolbar) for deleting notes (with confirmation if user wants it)
2. Search results be all presented in a column (in new tab) like the way thunderbird filters messages.
3. Easily create and attach one note to a lot of messages. (Presently it is cumbersome to add the same note to many messages )
4. Easily delete notes from many messages by marking the messages and then click the "delete notes from messages" option or a "delete notes" button in message toolbar.
5. A new tag in thunderbird to tag messages having a note

overall, a useful and very much needed add on

Update after Developer's reply:
I followed the steps provided by the developer (congrats for the immediate and detailed reply) and successfully changed the icon in message toolbar. My tag suggestion has to do with an option to auto tag (under the same tag and without manual user intervention) all emails that have messages.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.2.2.9).

Thank you for the high quality review.

> Minor problems: Bad icon in message toolbar (TB 3.1)
Actually you may replace it yourself. Locate file messagenotesplus.jar. It may look something like c:\Users\alex\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\ydrahk2q\extensions\[email protected]\chrome\messagenotesplus.jar. It is actually zip archive. Unpack it. Find skin\note_icon_grey.png there and replace it by picture you like. Then pack the archive back. Of course the names of the files should remain the same.
Also if you have ideas about the icon please give me the link to the image I will use that in next version.

> 5. A new tag in thunderbird to tag messages having a note
Well, I use TB 3.1 myself. And as far as I can see user can create any custom tags. What do you mean exactly?

I will take all your suggestions in mind for next version. Especially ability to attach notes.

It is so useful to be able to add any info you like to received emails, I've wanted this function for so long. Good work, Thank you.

One small glitch, version 1.2.2.9 is not found when checking for updates to v 1.1 or show on the main page until you view the version info at the bottom of the page. The xpi file is named slightly differently, so this maybe why.

Every version should be reviewed by the mozilla developers before it becames actual on the site. The review is needed to cut off insecure or of a poor quality add-ons. It took a couple of months for the first one. All versions are available on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/messagenotesplus/versions/.
Thanks for the feedback.

This is a brilliant tool in a multi-user environment with different shifts. You just leave the one note, rather than sending everybody updates all the time. Really useful!

Excellent!!! this is just what I have been looking for! The office is no longer cluttered with post-its and we don't have to keep passing notes from one person to the next; we now simply add a note to the email and it is there for the next person! Fantastic!!

Great add-on. Real helpful when trying to keep an eye out and organizing.
Finally I won't have to call my colleague in the middle of the night to ask them what's the status of the e-mail, or use 200 other software programs to leave updates...

I've searched for an addon like this since over several months. Great! Exactly, exactly what I need :)

One small question, I would like to customize position of show/hide node button on mail toolbar, because the last button always was the DELETE. This button (and its functionality) was burned into my brain :-), this new one is really annoying.

I tried to customize the mail toolbar, but this something is a special button, I wasn't able to move to other position.

The "Hide note" button is not working.

This review is for a previous version of the add-on (1.1).

1. Unfortunately I don't know the easy way to make at the same time i) the position of show/hide button customizable and ii) the button should be preinstalled. But I will try.
2. Yes, the hide button doesn't work quite well. The fix will be in the next version.
