This addon no longer works on the current version of Thunderbird - 102.0.3, which updated today.
What a pita
Version series 8.* should be working. Please update the Addon and be sure to have version 8.1.2. For further Support go to the support forum on www.thunderbird-mail.de

Very useful plugin. Native Thunderbird lacks this feature.
It would be even more useful, if the [Show HTML] button could hide html again on a second click.
Reverting to plain text is possible by Shift+Click

@bob_f1: I had the same problem (macOS) update didn't help, this worked for me: I uninstalled "Allow HTML Temp" and installed it again, now again 5 stars.

This has been working great until Thunderbird updated to 91. Since then, when I click "Show HTML", it changes the view setting to "original HTML", and I have to change that setting or it keeps showing HTML in any other posts or email I open. .... I updated to version 7.0, which did not help. I just updated Thunderbird to 91.3.1, which I thought seemed to have solved the problem. Nope. still toggles to view message body as HTML. Funny that sometimes it seems to work right for a few tries, then not anymore. Win 7 OS
This review is for a previous version of the add-on (7.0).Which addon version is used? Maybe the addon was not updated, when Thunderbird was updated. There are some reports about such a problem.

Love this - I always read email in plain text if possible - but this advertised behavior doesn't work: "When switching to another message, it'll be shown automatically again in plain text or simple html mode (according to your settings" Original HTML is sticky, until I manually confirm Plain Text (which is already checked). (7.0 on TB 91.2.0 on Windows 8.1)

Thanks for all the work and time you put into this.
Its sad to hear Mozilla killed once again a great add-on (this time with Tb78), but that is what they do.
I removed all my add-ons over time from AMO too.
Noia4, Classic Theme Restorer, CustomizeMyBird, NewScrollbars, Classic Toolbar Buttons, GlassMyFox and others...

This works really great for messages.
I know that it is switched-off by design for "Blogs and News Feeds" - however, would it be possible to include it? It currently is the only show-stopper. Having plain-text by default renders most RSS unusable.

Great add-on!
Suggestion: would it be possible to keep the html formatting for printing only?
Absolutely no chance - sorry.
Invoking the print function reloads the message. So the add-on would need an "listener" "behind" this moment. But there is no "listener", which I could use to do this.
