With a bit of searching i have found happiness (at least, the best i could find for dark mode in Thunderbird).

This solves the problem of white background in the composition view for Thunderbird even in dark mode themes.
It also rewrites colors hues to match dark mode, which is exactly what i wanted.
However :
I understand this is a bit of a mathematical problem, but though this works well for most colors, it removes a lot in saturation (for instance a bright red will become a paler red). This is what we want in most instances, but there are some colors with which it does not work. For instance a golden yellow on light background becomes an ugly brown on dark background. We would ultimately like it to remain a golden yellow. Etc. (I do understand this is a challenge and a bit of a conendrum for the developper)

Also, the feature "disable Darko for this sender" from contextual menu did not seem to work for me. I had to manually enter the email adress in the settings lists for it to work on Thunderbird 11.8.0 (Win10)

And as some other users said, it would be nice to be able to have an interface in the settings, where we could fine-tune the colours ourselves to our liking (and possibly the amount of hue, saturation that is added/substracted in the formula ?)

All in all, apart from that, i am satisfied as it solves most of my problem, and I thank the developper for that !

Exactly what I needed! For some reason Dark Reader doesn't work but this extension works perfectly! I also changed the default Thunderbird background color to black and the text color to white to avoid white background flashes when switching messages.

The best dark theme addon. I wish there is an option to fine tune color.

Almost perfect plugin. Would be nice to add an option to switch between completely black theme (as it is now) and a little less black color to match the dark theme of Thunderbird.

This is what I have been looking for!

Does not work in thunderbird 115.3.3. No effect on message pane.
Update Oct 20: Followed the developer's instructions, and now the extension works. Might be a miracle ... but hey,

Hello,
Thunderbird sometimes breaks addons...
You can try to uninstall Darko, restart Thunderbird and install it back. That may help.
Alternatively, there is another (probably even better) dark mode addon - Dark Reader which may work.

Almost as good as dark reader (colors are quite alright, plaintext messages are perfect). Changing modes (light to dark) is just a click of a button at the top of the app.

Thank you.

Very nice plugin. I use it everyday and It's awesome for my eyes.
But I miss one feature: darko changes the message-box in the Inbox- and Mail-View. But is it possible that you can also add a button in the "write email" window ? some emails are written in a very dark font (don't know why) and It's very hard to read / write on this. would be awesome to also can switch it in the write window :)

Great addon! Darko is the only way I can have a (consistent) fully dark-themed Thunderbird (i.e., now also including the messages themselves).

One feature request: Is it possible to enable/disable Darko's dark mode automatically with the Thunderbird's theme preference? (I switch the OS theme twice on a daily basis manually - Thunderbird detects that and switches to the dark theme. It would be optimal if Darko could follow suit.)

Thanks for your work. Highly appreciated!

Edit: thanks for your reply. I already had found this setting, but I prefer switching themes manually - globally for the whole OS & apps. Alright, I will trigger Darko's dark mode manually in addition. Perhaps you'll find a way for automatic switching later (I guess Thunderbird's API is too restricted).

Hello,
There was some issue detecting dark theme from my addon.
But there is a "Automatic dark mode" setting where you can set time when it should enable/disable dark mode.

The settings page is a bit hidden in Thunderbird - right click addon icon / Manage extension / click the "Wrench" icon to access the Options page.

I love the idea of this, since Thunderbird's dark theme implementation is really poor. However, it suffers from a major shortcoming - it changes the message from white to black AFTER it loads, so every time you change messages, you're hit with a bright flash of white for a moment (in Thunderbird 102.x). Unfortunately, that bright flash with every message is worse than just using the light theme. :(

If that one issue were resolved, this would be a five-star extension, easily.

Hello,
It should work fine in the current Beta and also Alpha 101.
But Thunderbird is a bit broken sometimes, you can try to uninstall it, restart Thunderbird and install it back.
Alternatively, there is another (probably even better) dark mode addon - Dark Reader which may work.

Looks good, but one option is missing: configure, if only html-messages, only plain-text-messages or both are displayed in darkmode. In html-messages I usually want to see the original colors, but plain-text-messages should be dark.

Works great for me! Seems more lightweight, efficient and pleasing to look at than methods for achieving this in pre Thunderbird 78 versions.

Unfortunately, does not seem to work on Thunderbird 78.8 under Fedora Linux 32. Edit: I put the version before: 78.8. This is the only thing I see in the console and it's a warning: "Layout was forced before the page was fully loaded. If stylesheets are not yet loaded this may cause a flash of unstyled content."

When I toggle the extension I get an error: "uncaught exception: Object"

Hello,
Could you check what Thunderbird version are you using? Some of the older versions had issues. More info here:
https://github.com/fastaddons/Darko/issues/12

Also, does your other addons work?
Regarding my Darko - the code is very simple so there is not much room for errors. So if it doesn't work, it's most probably related to some issue in Thunderbird. You can also open Error console (Ctrl + Shift + J) and then press the Darko icon few times to see if there are some new errors being logged in. If yes, please send it to my support email and I will report it to Thunderbird team.
Thanks!.
