Mesler, would you be so kind to fix notary for TB 3.1? Please!!!

I was able to (apparently) hack this plugin so that it works in TB 3.0.4. One has to unpack the xpi file (which is just a zip), and then unzip the chrome/notary.jar file (which is also, just a zip) and modify the notify.js file so that it makes calls to gDBView; instead of GetDBView

Additionally, the install.rdf file needs to be modified so that the maxversion is 3.0 instead of 1.0.

I wrote a small script that will do it all for you (about 8 easy-to-read lines), if you are interested.

Regarding the functionality of the program, it seems to do what is advertised.

I got very hooked on this prior to TB2 and rely on it to the point that I've gone ahead and continued to use it even though the header pane is gone. It is wonderful. But losing that header pane is a serious headache. Please, please, please, puhlllllleasssse update this add-on!!! I know it's a pain to maintain software you're no longer interested in, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!!

Notary is an awesome tool! But it has the horrible problem in Thunderbird 2 that it crashes the header pane. I used Mr. Tech's Tookit to force it to be compatible, and that always works for awhile, but then it reverts to its header-pane destroying again.
Please make an updated version! Please!

I agree that it's an invaluable tool and I love the simplicity of it.
Unfortunately after tweaking to get it running on thunderbird 2+ also my header is destroyed.
Anyone has tips how to restore it?

Adding to the guys asking for updates: I would also willing to donate if someone finally develops an upgrad for the 2+ TB generations

To make it clear: "stored against the message" means stored in a TXT-File in your profile. If you - like me - are searching for a notes AddOn that works with IMAP mails across multiple clients, this is not for you :-(

Not a bad addon, with one exception.
Using the method discussed in previous comments, i changed the max version to 3.0. I am running Thunderbird 2.0.0.16, and after i installed the (modified) add-on, all my message headers disappeared, the window and everything. This could also be due to the fact that i also have many other add-ons installed. I tried disabling them, but the only way to get the headers bar back was to uninstall Notary.
Any ideas...

This is an essential add-on, especially if you are implementing the GTD system. Thank you to the earlier comment that showed how to make it work. It took me about an hour or so to figure it out, but I got it working. It doesn't seem to be damaging the header pane either - though I do remember seeing that problem before. I fixed it just by adjusting the notary window size.

Here's how to zip up the results after editing the Install.rdf. It won't work if you don't do it exactly like this.

Take the Install.rdf file and the chrome directory (which only contains notary.jar), and put them in a directory "tmp" on your desktop.

Then open a console window, and run the following commands.

cd tmp
zip -r ../notary.xpi *

You will now have a file notary.xpi on your desktop which you can install from the Addons window in Thunderbird.

This extension is indispensable. I have it running on TBird 2 using the instructions from an earlier comment. The problem is that it breaks the header pane. I thought about making it 4 stars because of this, but the author never claimed it works on TBird 2, so that would be unfair. The conundrum is that I can't decide which is more important: The notes or the header pane. I think I'm going to go with the notes for now because they're so darn useful, but I REALLY hope this gets updated soon for TBird 2 so I can have my header pane back! Awesome extension.

I'll more than happy to donate dollars to get it fixed for TB2!!!

I think this extension is better than XNote because I like it better that it places the notes in the bottom of each message, rather than sticking a yellow note-it on top of everything. Also, the data is saved in a plain text file that can be easily messed with, whereas XNote is also text but does have some binary data too.

WISH! Now if a column could be added in the list view so you can see which mails have notes (like XNote does), I would be thrilled and change my rating to 5 stars! ... someone please......!

One thing to fix (or make as a setting): When you change a note the previous version of the note is still retained. Another note entry for the mail is just added with a newer time stamp. I think it would be good to at least have an option to clean that u....

but I haven't been able to make the fix suggested by Brian Kelly. I have IZArc, but I can't work out how to put the updated Install.rdf file back into the original .xpi file.

I used to use another note-taking extension, then switched to Message Notes (which also doesn't work with the current TB), then switched to this. I found this to be the most useful, but it isn't working for me anymore. For anyone with TB lower than 2.0 (or TB 2.0, if you're intelligent enough to work with archived files), I highly recommend this. I can't tell you what a difference it makes to be able to take notes while you're processing your email.

Ideally, the author should update this to TB 2.0 so there doesn't have to be a workaround (however simple that may be for the truly computer savvy), but for the rest of us, if you haven't updated to TB 2.0, you need this!

I also find this little extension very useful. I work in customer support for a genealogy program and find the little notes I can add to messages very handy for keeping track of fixes I have suggested. I am also the bug coordinator for the program so I can keep notes on which bug report applies to a message about a confirmed bug.

I just found out that this will work with TBird 2.0.0.9. All I had to do was the following:

1. Open the .xpi file in a Winzip file manager (I use Izarc)
2. Extract the Install.rdf file to your hard drive
3. Edit the Install.rdf file as follows
Find the maxversion entry
Change the 1.0+ to 3.0
Save the install.rdf
Add the Install.rdf file to the .xpi to replace the existing copy.
Close the winzip program
Open TBird 2
Go to Tools > Add ons
Find Notary in the list and select it.
Use the Install Button
Proceed through the install steps
Restart Tbird to activate Notary.

I guess people just don't realize how valuable this tool is. Based on so few reveiws etc. I can tell you once you start using it, you cannot live without it.
The notes can be hidden/shown at a click, you can make notations regarding customers for future reference etc. I will not upgrade Thunderbird ever until Notary is upgraded. I just need what I have notated in emails too much, to abandon them. I hope someone upgrades it, and have offered to pay for such in the discussion I started below. email me at [email protected] if you have the ability and want to upgrade it. Actually I just remembered the programmer who works for me! I bet he can do it. Well please write anyway in case that doesn't pan out.

I wish more people would try (and rate) this highly useful extension. It enables TB to be a much more useful contact management tool. Every incoming or outgoing message can have hidden notes. Helps me keep track of why I save emails in the first place.

A great idea. So simple, and yet so convenient. It adds an additional pane to all messages (interestingly enough including RSS feeds) where notes may be typed. No saving required. Only 2 buttons on the pane. One to delete the note and the other to search - which I can't fathom out how to use. Still, you can't expect everything. Maybe the developer will suggest how ? All in all the add-on does what it sets out to do with a minimum of fuss.
