This is a fabulous extension. PLEASE UPDATE it to work with v68.

This is not working correctly. I have Thunderbird 60.8.0. I just tried this....used "Edit Source" to type a note next to text in a message. When I finished and re-opened the message, the note I typed is not there, not anywhere on the page. However, when I went to "Edit Source" again, the text I typed is still there.

Also, this says the original (unedited) message will be moved to "Trash," but I cannot find the message in any of my "Trash" or "Deleted Items" folders. (However, the supposedly edited version is in my inbox, so I didn't lose anything.)

Great addon for editing message source!

but it has severe drawback - it messes the encoding every time when a message with several different encodings is processed

It changes the subject, which I am very happy with, but the email cannot be found any more. The reason I want to use this plugin was to rename and find again.

I just saw that when I edit the source it is possible to find hen searched for. So I added two more stars...

Can, please, someone tell me if it's possible to alter the header of an email to be sent? If yes: how?
Thanks very much in advance
Alf

One of my all time favourites. Always in the list of add-ons for any new install.

Hoping for an upgrade because it no longer works with Thunderbird 59. It loads, but you can't change the headers, and the full source is just blank.

I've used this addon for years and I wouldn't be without it. Both header and source editing worked well up until about a year ago when I started having to try several times to save the source edits, now that feature doesn't work anymore.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what if anything could be done to fix it.

Fortunately so far, I've been able to add as as much data as I've needed to the modify the header to my liking. I don't know what the character limit is, if any.

Invaluable as is but a fix would be great.

First, I echo what Infinity said on 2016-06-27, that the edit (full source) window always pops up too big, and then I (in Win 10) use the Windows+right-arrow button to get it so I can see the OK/Cancel buttons at the bottom. Seems like that might be a simple-ish fixed if reviewed.

I use this add on for lots of simple edits, sometimes throwing out a bunch of useless mime data in it to strip the email down to the core text which is all I want to archive for myself, etc., but another thing I've lately been trying to do is fix messages that are part of a long conversation, but a correspondent replied at some point with their mobile phone (I'm guessing the default Android email app, e.g., does this), and it breaks the conversation because the proper message-ids are not set in the References and In-Reply-To headers.

If the conversation is important enough, I may want to manually fix this, but the problem is, even once I fix it, it does not show up in 'open in conversation' within Tbird. I later discovered the workaround to that is to make the header changes, but then closee Tbird, go find this file in your profile directory:

global-messages-db.sql

delete it, and then restart Tbird. That's not too terrible, unless you have a really huge profile, like I do, with thousands of messages in it -- the rebuild takes a long time, on a fast PC.

My suggestion would be that, if possible, after changes are made to a message, Header Tools Lite does something to Tbird to force it to reindex *just the message just edited* as if it had just come in new, with those headers, and then would get properly threaded into the conversation I want it to.

Reasonable? I have no idea, just thought I'd voice the opinion. I've read some bug reports from people with similar problems, possibly trying to solve the issue in other ways, but if this Add-on could just change in the way I described above, it'd be great.

Thanks for your efforts thus far!

This is the only Thunderbird AddOn I use. There are numerous situations when I want to change the header / body of a mail I have received or sent. I wish it handled Base64-encoded text (ie decoded the test so you coded edit it). But its still a great thing.

This is a hugely useful addon that I use extensively, but it has some annoying problems.

On my laptop (resolution 1366 x 768) both the header edit and full edit windows constantly appear larger than the size of the screen, so the entire title bar and the OK and Cancel buttons are not visible or reachable, You then have to manually drag window borders to shrink it down and get the buttons within reach. However, the next time you launch either edit window, it's back to the same huge size again, so you have to go through this window sizing exercise every single time. The window should never be bigger than the desktop that it's being displayed on, and it should also retain its last used size and position.

The second annoyance (don't know if this can even be fixed) is that making simple adjustments to emails (e.g. email subject changes) changes a date somewhere that affects display order so that the edited email jumps to the top of the list rather than staying in its original position. It's weird because the sent or received date remains unchanged, but various email clients end up displaying the emails in incorrect date order once edited. Also the recipient name gets changed when viewed in web mail clients. Instead of showing the name and email of the person the email was sent to, it shows your own email name and address (as if you had sent it to yourself). This is despite the fact that no edits have been made to either sender or recipient. It does not seem to affect Thunderbird, but when accessing the same email account in a web browser, I have a bunch of emails in my sent folder where the recipient name is me.

I wanted to try this Add-on but I am on 37.0.1 so I will add my voice to the requests for an update and give it a potential 5 stars :)
EDIT Sorry. My mistake! It works fine. Just as well that I gave it 5 stars! I think I was trying to put in the wrong version.

This add-on is a must for me, absolutely fantastic, it helps to keep my mails organized.

Unfortunately, "Change header details" option does not work anymore in TB v31.4. "Edit full source" does, but it's a bit more dangerous if you only want to change mail subject.

Very useful since most people are not organised at all and tend to just ask me questions by replying to their latest email - regardless that they are quoting an invoice or some irrelevant message and confusingly off-topic subject. Not to mention all those people who write an entire message in the subject and leave the message empty!.

I really wanted this to also handle optimising embedded and attached images. I need to recompress & shrink all those bmp screenshots and oversized photos.

This addon is absolutely indispensable! I don't go a single day without using it numerous times to keep my messages well organized.

Sadly, today I upgraded Thunderbird to version 30 and had I known that it was incompatible with the current version of Header Tools Lite, I never would have done so.

I do hope we can expect an update soon! Thank you so much for your contribution.

works great, very useful. It would be great to automate the execution, for instance when the message arrives

unuseful for me.. what would be cool is a way to disable & create header fields that generate id's automatically when email is sent.. to disable some mime headers added by the email client & personalize it

Love this. Use it to organize work as I annotate subject lines to better organize emails. The older TB Header Tools Extension 0.7.2 stopped working after I updated to TB 24.

My thanks to the developer for working on this. Hope it continues to work :)
