this is very convenient, especially when I can also have a dictionary's user account to bookmark fav words!

A major, trusted dictionary that describes language rather than prescribing it (like the Oxford English Dictionary) does, webster's dictionary is authoritative without attempting to control the English language according to the wishes of elite, conservative lexicographers.

This add-on takes me straight to the page of the definition, saving me two pages: the search page and the half-a-definition page that I think contains ads I've blocked. Therefore, it saves me considerable time and bandwidth on mobile Internet.

The pages are faster to load and freer of junk than thoseof Dictionary.com, but could be cleaner: it would be nice to have less 'Did You Know?'-style rubbish and less advertisement -- but it's not too bad. I'm guessing the paid service is probably cleaner, more comprehensive and more configurable -- there's no such thing as a free lunch, or not often, anyway.

This lunch comes with no added poisonous propaganda (to my knowledge), minimal packaging and high nutrition.

========================================

To rebut a couple of other reviews: 'American English, not English' -- I'm guessing it lists British English usages too. And many users will be American -- death to pretentious xenophobic snobbery.

'Dictionary.com is better' -- it's bloated and I think the Webster's in that is the 1913 one. Dictionary.com has many dictionaries, some of which are not trustworthy. I'd rather get results straight from the dictionary I trust without unreliable or outdated garbage to sift through.

Doesn't work with Ubuntu? It's working with Iceweasel 17.0.0.10 on Debian 7. :->

Takes you to an ad page? It doesn't do that to me.

I tried to install this search engine, as such good use I obtained in the past.
I am using MFF 25.0 on Ubuntu 13.10 but can't install this search engine now, a window pops up with the message "Please use a Mozilla compatible software such as Firefox".
Unbelievable.

Works very well. Saves the trouble of going to MW's website. The poor ratings are for ridiculous things.

dj1917 - These Reviews are for the add-on, not the dictionary. You may or may not agree with how Merriam-Webster itself works, but do not penalize the Add-On with a bad rating because of that. The author of the add-on did not write the dictionary, just the code to efficiently redirect to the dictionary.

Good source for quick definitions.

>American English, not English.
So? We are very sorry that we also have dictionaries for our particular idiom.

This is a good add-on. I had no issues with it not opening the definition page for the word I selected. As a writer, I have used m-w.com as an online dictionary for years after finding discrepancies and errors using other dictionaries. Yes, they do have ads and registered services to offer, but that is a small inconvenience to suffer for the volume of free and ACCURATE information they offer. My only regret is waiting so long to get this add-on.

Minus the occasional invite to sign up for the unabridged version, I find I trust this dictionary over many others on the Internet. While Merriam-Webster does not have the sprawling etymologies of the OED, it has the correct connotations and usages of words. Although the Merriam-Webster site is frequently bogged down with advertisements, the add-on works quite flawlessly.

Fantastic - I use this from the Firefox search box. For Google I use my home page.

It's annoying that most of these reviews are focused on Merriam Webster's usability and not the add-on itself. The add-on works great!

As for Dictionary.com, only word wimps use that--it's frequently inaccurate because it uses non-standard dictionaries. Merriam Webster's site is annoying to browse, but at least you're getting correct definitions. I alternate between using Merriam Webster at work (it's our company's standard) and the Oxford English Dictionary at home (it's a much better resource but uses British spellings. While access isn't free, most library systems subscribe to it and I access it through mine).

Since Merriam-Webster is the industry standard, and I prefer not to take my chances with faulty and incomplete definitions and references, this is what I use. If you want inaccurate definitions and spellings, there are plenty of them out there.

Either it doesn't work with Flock or I'm missing something. Nothing on right click and see no option for toolbar etc. In fact, although attempting to re-install it results in a pop-up saying it's already there, I cannot see it listed in Flock's add-on extensions or plug-ins at all! So no clue how to uninstall it. Pronounce, however, works perfectly! Shame, as I rarely need help pronouncing words and hate having to jump to merriam-webster.com to grab the odd definition. Had high hopes! Pronounce will be a boon for my youngest child, however!
