One solution is install "Quicktext" add-on and then createthe following new template and call it "highlight"

<mark>[[SELECTION]]</mark>

when [SELECTION] is a variable of Quicktext.

With this you can select any part of text in mail, then click "highlight" in Quictext menu to highlight the selected text

Simple and effective!

The add-on is great but it can't supuport the latest version 68.4.2.
You can install this addon "ThunderHTMLedit" to show HTML button in message body. If you want highlight (yellow) any text, just simple input your text inside this <mark>....your text....</mark>. It still works well.

Just like many other people I miss that smart addon in v.68...
The best workaround I found so far: select text then press Alt / choose Insert/HTML... type <mark> before the text and </mark> at the end then click Insert. Hope this helps until we get a working version back...

Something I just discovered, and believe me it's still a pretty wonky way to go about highlighting:
Get the "Quicktext" add-on. Make an HTML template of a 1 x 1 table with 0 for border, pad, and cell space. Make the background your favorite highlight color.
Now you can just quick-text a little yellow or whatever color table box into your email document without having to create a 1 x 1 table every time you want some highlighting. Like I said, still wonky, but this is a bit better...

Used this many times a day WHEN it worked but alas, now no more and no other options. In my view it's a MUST for any text based software and should be built in from the start. I do hope this will be addressed in future versions of TB. We seem to be going back not forward.

Incompatible with Thunderbird version 68.4.1
¿Any other options?

Please Thunderbird, bring this app back. Even tho I love Tbird, and donate to Mozilla, it is frustrating that with each tiny upgrade you take away more useful apps.

Hi André, I see you answered the request to update to version 68
>> I would love to, but the documentation for Thunderbird
>> development is still broken.

I suggest you to join https://thunderbird.topicbox.com/groups/addons where you will find all needed information

I hope you will make the extension compatible with the latest versions of Thunderbird

The HIGHLIGHTER feature was taken away and not compatible in the latest version (68.3.1) of Thunderbird. I found this a very helpful tool and hope you will restore the function soon.

I'm new to Thunderbird and have the latest version so I'm hoping like everyone else that your add-on will be updated to work.

I have a work-around in the meantime. Find highlighted text from another program and email it to yourself. Then copy the highlighted text from the email you just sent & paste into your new email and type whatever you want highlighted within the copied text. Not ideal but it works.

Same for me : I'm using a lot this this module "highlighter", that is very useful, and that I love !
But unfortunately, it doesn't work with the version 68.3.1.
So everybody would be really happy if you could update this module very quickly.
Or else, I'll have to try to go back to the old version of Thunderbird, which is not ideal...
Can you let us know if you are already working on it ? And if so, how soon do you think you will be able to serve us this new version of "Highlighter"? Thank you very much in advance.
Can you send us a message when you'll have finish a new version ?
And congratulations on your work !

This module is really very useful. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with the version 68.3.1 (none of the modules I use works with this version in fact ...). So it would be really nice if you could do something to help on this point. Thank you very much in advance.

Please make this work with 68.3.0
Even messing with the config file and adding
extensions.checkCompatibility.68.3.0 False still does not allow it to be installed.

Yes, I know. I tried too. No luck so far.

Dear Andre, please make it work for 68.3 version

I love this plugin and would give it 5 stars, but miss using it since it is incompatible with TB 68.2 :(

Surely some TB devs can help out the Highlighter developer with some docs or pointers

Please (!) update this plugin for compatibility to Thunderbird 68.2.0.

I would love to, but the documentation for Thunderbird development is still broken.

I'm thankful to anyone who helps me to work better in TB but although your add on installed without a hitch, it doesn't seem to work with my version of TB (60.9.0 32 bits)
Since André's answer, I checked TB settings and I am composing messages in HTML already so something is blocking it in my latest version of TB

This is strange, I tried in Thunderbird 60 / Linux, and it works.
You need to compose the message in HTML, of course.

Andre, your addon is really great to me, use it for years, could you please consider to upgrade it for TB68. It is shame that TB doesn't have this option integrated by default...
May we collect some donations?

Hello tomx,
Thanks for the review. I will check the status of the documentation to create add-ons on Thunderbird.
If the documentation is up to date and helpful, I will give it a try.

EDIT: I am working on an updated version, in my free time. Let's see how long it will take.

André

This is a great help. Used it for years but not compatible with TB version 68.1. Can this be updated ?. Or any alteratives ?. I really need this
