Great addon, very usefull !!
Only problem is that MailMerge overloads mail server while sending a large number of messages but maybe you can use the "send later" option to delay the delivery and let your mail client send your messages slower ;p

Csucho says it all. Works great but overloads mail server. Limiting to 1 per second would be a great start (but user controlled delay would be better). my computer: new Win7 with SSD sends 250 in < way less than minute.

Very nice, easy to use, fast, great to write personal messages in the subject field.
The only problem I had is with my mail server. Sending 50 mails. Mail Merge opens too many concurrent connections and my mail provider does not like, closing all connections.
Anyway to spped down or limit how many connections are open at the time?

Someone asked for clearer instructions. I found some nice ones at http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Staff/Procedures/tbird-mailmerge.shtml.
The one thing I haven't understood is how to edit one of the messages by hand after executing the merge but before sending.

This plugin can do at least two things that are impossible with mailmerge in MS Office (and most likely OpenOffice as well):
1. it can put variable into subject field
2. variable in the "to" field can contain more email adresses (not just one) - therefore you can send personalised messages to groups of people (this is the reason why I started using this - I want a groups of people to get message personalised for the group as a whole and I want them to see the other group users adresses in the email header)
however it has little bit cryptic error messages ...

Once installed and tested a few times, this add-on really is a breeze to use. My only requests are to add the ability to embed images and, as well as, improving the description of steps involved in doing a Mail Merge (see Darek's 6-8-11 review).

Just wanted to say Thank You for all the work you've put into this. I have been using mail merge for Thunderbird for a few months now to send emails to clients. It's been fantastic - I especially enjoy the fact that all the messages go to your outbox for preview before sending. It makes the distribution process much less stressful.A possible improvement, if I may suggest, is to offer tips/help or examples within the add-on itself - the attachment functionality took some research to figure out. All in all, excellent work! Thank you very much!Darek

I added Mail Merge to my Thunderbird a few days ago. Now after sending out a newsletter for nearly 3 years with a bland cover mail, I am able to personalize the email. That is so great! I have found Alexander's support speedy and comprehensive.
If you need to send out personalized emails to a club, social group, or anyone, this add-on will do what you need. I recommend it highly.

i tried author's suggested workaround for embedding images, but it doesn't work 100%. sometimes my signature image shows up but left out another image, vice versa, or both would get left out. though if i keep my mailing group real small (<5) it seems to work fine

Astounding. This is one of the crucial features that has previously been missing in TB for non-technical users like me. I for one can live with using an online source for images used for mass personal mails.
