I've installed it, found I don't need it, and that it seems to slow Thunderbird boot-up times considerably.

It would be helpful to know how to uninstall this add-on. (Win XP, sp3; Thunderbird 3.0.4)

Enigmail is uninstalled like any other add-on in Thunderbird: go to the menu Tools > Add-ons; click on the entry for Enigmail and select the button "Uninstall".

I have been using enigmail for some years and although it is maintained essentially by a single developer it has generally worked very well, including for nightly builds of Thunderbird. Occasionally changed in Thunderbird make it incompatible with Enigmail until the enigmail is patched and rebuilt. This happened in the past month, but today the latest nightly version of Enigmail works beautifully with the current nightly of Thunderbird (3.1pre on 3rd May 2010).

It would be nice if Mozilla took on board this really valuable and functional extension and supportd it as a core part of its product. After all GPG encryption for email is essential to a significant number of email users. Some users who are using other mail clients may switch to Thunderbird if Enigmail was available by default. It would be nice if more developers were able to keep the extension patched as the Thunderbird developers update and extend Thunderbird in preparation for its next important release.

A Must-Have Addon for Thunderbird, great work!

I went to Enigmail's website (http://enigmail.mozdev.org/) and went to the Downloads page - loaded the appropriate version for the appropriate platform, e.g. x86_64) and the version of Thunderbird you're using, e.g. 3. It worked!

It does show that Thunderbird is not installing the correct Enigmail version into Thunderbird application properly

""Enigmail" could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Thunderbird build type (Linux_x86_64-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem."

I found out, that the 64bit Version provided on the development homepage works. However, Thunderbird itself tries to install the wrong version.

The previous comment tells me that the poster probably didn't read the instructions, clearly stating that GnuPG is required. Installed that first, then Enigmail and all is well.

In order to install the Enigmail plugin on Linux, one needs to run SeaMonkey or Thunderbird as root, or as administrator on Vista and Windows XP. Attempting to install it while running the application from a regular user account will cause the installation to fail with a cryptic "Unexpected error -211" message, totally unhelpful to people who haven't memorized the Mozilla error code tables. This critical piece of information can be found on forums, but should have been added to the plugin description here to avoid frustration for users. That's why I give the application a meager 3 stars.

you'd think things like Enigmail would be the default/norm/standard method for email. but its not. It is a shame enigmail isn't included with thunderbird by default as well... but that's been said a million times, enough about that.

Enigmail is a add-on that transforms email, rather than Thunderbird. With Enigmail, you generate a key that can be used to identify/authenticate you, yourself. It means you can 'sign' your email with this key, and it can be 3rd party verified that it really did come from you and no one else. If any/every email was done this way... you could feel confident that when your bank emailed you, (or other very sensitive matter), it really came from them. Email scams would nearly cease to exist. Spam would follow just as quickly and email would be more like personal mail.

The second benefit (if you choose) of Enigmail is full encryption. Lets face it, Gmail admins must read your email, if they don't, then maybe the don't, but its my word against theirs... but those ads that seem to know what your emails about didn't get that way from someone guessing, and who knows what metrics they keep on what ads they've sent to you (after all, that know its you, your email address doesn't change). Full encryption means without the key (think of it as a password that only receiver gets to know), no one can read your email.

amazing...

i read about public and private keys in a book called Little Brother, and when i researched them i was surprised to see an encryption software that used it as easily assessable as this one

There are more downloads at the developers' site:
http://enigmail.mozdev.org/download/index.php

NB, if you have 64bit or AMD64 Linux, you need the 64bit extension, only available at their site.

Great extension! It's unobtrusive and the initial setup is just this:
1) install ThunderBird (I use Ubuntu, and it's not the default email client)
2) install Enigmail extension
3) Follow instructions http://enigmail.mozdev.org/documentation/quickstart-ch2.php

Note that for users of other OS's, you may have additional steps. Step 3 is basically just a howto and best-practice on how to use the Enigmail Wizard.

BTW, I don't know why it turns off HTML email as the default... I have tested it with PGP/MIME on HTML emails and it seems to work fine...

I installed the software and so far i had no problems. Encryption and decryption works perfectly and brings more security.
It's nowhere mentioned, that a permanent decryption of E-Mails after receiving them in an inbox or in a folder is not possible (except you export them as Text-File).
As a result, the inbuilt helpful Thunderbird search and filter functions to organize and search messages cannot be used for encrypted messages anymore.
