It seems to have been broken by recent FF releases - fails to build a shopping list now - all generated lists are completely blank.

Very last update of the Grocery List Generator add-on:

Wow--thanks for this! I haven't used all of its features yet, but based on the functionality and interface, I'm sure it will be of tremendous use.

In response to the review by the vegan, below, it is, in fact, possible to rename any category. And you can delete individual items and add others as well. If renaming hasn't done the trick, once the category has been emptied of items, it's easy to delete the category entirely.

It's perfect for me - I especially like the addition of the amount per item, so I can estimate the total I'm going to spend.

It fits my needs almost PERFECTLY. I depend on using this for organizing my shopping needs. Thank you for making this! I do however have two suggestions/requests:
1. A feature to minimize/hide specific Item Types (e.g. Fruits and Vegetables, Beverages, etc.) so when you one to look at just one Item Type, and it's at the bottom at the list, it can be MUCH more condensed.
2. You can make a list and then print it and/or export it, but what if you want to print and export the items in their entirety? I know there is an option to save the GLG to a folder of choice, and I suppose a more tech savvy person could open the files and figure it out that way. But it would be much more practical for there to be a print and export button at the very top of the program when you open it, not just when you want to generate a list.

I would be even more willing to pay for this program if you added those features.

This is an excellent grocery list generator. I've had no problems with freezes whatsoever. It does take a bit of time to set up, but it's far better than any I've tried before and once it's set up, very easy to use. We tend to do most of our shopping once a month and it's great to enter items as you notice you need them and then print them out just before you go shopping. I have tried several other grocery list set ups and none work nearly as well. Has a few quirks, but what program doesn't? Love it

It would be nice if it didn't cause ff to be completely unusable (freezing ff every ten minutes and that happens for 15 - 20 minutes). Also, it's a pain to set up.

Needs a price field per group item to show how much we are spending.

This is great for shoppers who like to cook at home but often forget what ingredients they need. The program is slightly cumbersome though, so more efficiency would definitely be appreciated in newer versions. All in all, however, this application does save time.

Great extension. Very handy. Has a couple of quirks - in order to add new items to a category, one must first move the category to the top of the list for example, but overall is awesome. Thank you.

TKainz,
I tried your dat file editing trick. It works great and really is much faster since the program is a little clunky. Instead of typing in everything for each item, you can just copy one item then paste several times. Then you just need to change the item name and number. This also seems to be the only way to edit a category name.

...but I wish the skin could be changed!!!

GLG still needs a few minor quirks ironed out but it's the best addon I can find for this purpose.

Don't give up too easily on this, take a short moment to customize it to your needs and you'll soon see the potential it offers. Organized properly, it will save you time and money in the supermarket.

Thank you for this sweet little program. My wife is overjoyed. While there are a few little 'quirks' with the program - the most notable is the lack of an "add" button or something similar on the page where you add new grocery items, it seems simply leaving the page and then returning serves the same purpose. Beyond that, it's simple enough for the PC challenged (my lovely wife being one of that group) but not so dumbed down that it's not really useful (the program not my wife - thank you). For those that are impatient, like me, instead of going through the hoops when entering your initial grocery items - which may number in the hundreds - an option is to enter them directly into the database file. By going to the Grocery List Generator Options menu, make a note of the directory where the data files are stored. Using Wordpad (not notepad) open the 'glg_items.dat' file; you'll see the list of grocery items. You'll see that each item starts with a unique number. Make a note of the highest number already being used. Simply add to the bottom of the list starting with the next highest number followed by a pound sign, the category, another pound sign, the actual item and and finally a final pound sign. When you've completed adding to your list, save the file. Open up FireFox, run the add on and voila, all your items are there, categorized and all. You can even easily delete unwanted items this same way - open the file, delete the whole line containing the item you don't want, save the file and it'll be gone the next time you open the add-on. Thanks again for this little gem of a program.

I love this add on! There is lots of grocery/menu software, but they all come with a hefty price. I don't see how anyone can complain about this one because it does so much and did I mention -- it's free! Anyway, there were a few reviewers that mentioned not being able to change an item easily. I was able to double click on items and get to their screen where I could change the name, the category or even add notes. I did notice a few times that I would find a "new item" randomly in the categories, but it wasn't anything major. I love that you can enter recipes and then when you want to make something all you have to do is add the entire recipe to the grocery list. The recipes could be as simple as saying "Ham sandwiches" if you want to automatically add bread, ham, mayo, chips, etc. in one click. One of things I did was change the categories to the aisles in my grocery store. Then, when the items print they are already in the order in which I shop so it makes my shopping experience so much quicker. I also print the items in the two column printout (look under the options icon) and then I fold the page in half, tape up the ends and use the resulting pocket to keep my coupons in. I can write the sales and coupon information my the items that I printed. PERFECT! Thanks so much for this great add-on!

Here;s the thing, once installed, thee is a button to browse where the destination folder goes for GLG data, it didn't popup on the firdt try before I ran the app. Something about the database may not be ready until you run it at least once. After that it was fine and I changed the folder. DON'T try to go into your setings in FireFox and try to manually get it to point to a new folder, you'll screw it up.

That being said, I have been searching for a tool like this and I am glad to have it. I was using my wife's Palm's Task List, but categories and checking/unchecking items was a nightmare. There are other tools out there, but I have no interest in paying for anything.

I like that is it customizable, it comes with categories like Fruits, Canned goods, Beverages, Snacks etc, and some sample recipe items (without the actual recipe text, so it's just to get an idea of how it works) and food items in the categories like Milk, Onions, Potatoes etc, again to see how it all works.

I easily began making my GLG a Vegetarian/Organic database and started adding my own recipe items. We plan to use this for Meal Planning to ease our stress at suppertimes!

You go, Cpt. Caveman! Keep up the good work

**healthy, stable installation of XP Pro SP3 +FFox 3.0.4**

been using this for at least 18 months. immediately after initial default installation i moved the data files to a preferred sub-directory and pointed the program to that DIR. got errors every time i opened/closed the program for weeks. not sure why/how but they eventually slowed to a trickle. guess it's a slow learner.

try to add or delete an items. error: "Could not find the selected item. Please try again." (repeats twice each time). i've been trying to delete the same item forever but all this buggy program does is delete the top item in the category. i must have deleted 5-10 'innocent' items before i figured that out. the item i want to delete just sits there, laughing.

after 'forcing' a new item onto the list i get the same error as above when i attempt to generate list.

after annual reformat/reinstallation of Windows the same problems come back immediately.

on a less critical (but still important) note, users should be able to reduce font on the generated list, even if only by using Ctrl+-. further print options wouldn't hurt either. but like i said, these are options to worry about once a program is stable.

i just wanted something to keep a running 'aisle-by-aisle' grocery list, as this add-on suggests. GLG has promise and ambitious higher-functions but it simply can't be relied upon for the fundamental core task of maintaining a running custom grocery list.

I have now been using this add-on for several months and it is the only way I now prepare my grocery list. I do agree with the reviewer from the 31st July however, I have the same problems. I only get those 2 errors if I have the recipe section closed.

It's not easy to use or useful. I searched google for grocery list and found a couple others 100% easier to use - without downloading anything. I want a click & print list that is easy to use - I did not find it with this.

I really do like this, even though I just rated it a 3. It's extremely helpful, but there are things that bug me. One is that when adding or editing an item, when you go back to the master list, you are bumped to the top. Another is that it only alphabetizes depending on case. (A-Z-a-z. In that order.) Also, for some reason I always, when opening the extension or generate list, I get 2 error messages about not being able to locate an item that doesn't exist. And I have issues with renaming list sections - sometimes I can edit the titles, but mostly not. Still, I use it regularly and it's very helpful.

The add-on itself is pretty intuitive. It's fairly easy to work with and add to. But there needs to be a way to move items to a different category, and change the names of items in pre-existing recipes.

All in all though, I really like it. I've been looking for a program like this for a long time, and this is better than most of the ones I've seen that cost thirty or forty dollars.

I like it. Beside the fact that it won't go ascending or descending it does not matter to me. I plan to go through my store and write down what isle things are in and list my items as I go. The only problem with that is once every 6 months or so the store rearranges itself. I will recommend the program to my friends.
